Bruny Island cruise

Thursday, November 5, 2009
Bruny Island is the place for the ultimate Tasmanian wilderness experience. On land, you venture into the wilderness on one of the many bushwalks. At sea, you can explore the magnificent coastline of the island.

South Bruny National Park covers the coastline and some of the hinterland between Fluted Cape and the southern part of Great Taylors Bay.

Bruny Island Cruises, run by local man Robert Pennicott, is committed to coastal conservation and part of the ticket price is donated to the Tasmanian Parks & Wildlife Service.

Eco-cruises follow Bruny's coastline from Adventure Bay, south to The Friars and along the edge of the South Bruny National Park. The multi-award-winning three-hour eco-adventure cruise goes through some of Tasmania's unspoilt coastline in a safe, fast and comfortable boat.

You will see stunning natural cliff formations, Breathing Rock, the towering Monument and lush emerald forests. There are Jurassic dolomites, rock columns, caves and blowholes. Fluted Cape, a cliff formation, is 272m high.

There's abundant marine and bird life and always the chance to see fur seals, dolphins, albatross, sea eagles and shearwater. During October and November, migrating whales enjoy the waters around the island.

South Bruny National Park is accessible only by boat. There are no roads or walking tracks.

When you're through with boating and exploring, Bruny has excellent restaurants and cafes, and you will be tempted by handmade fudge, chocolate, truffles, berries, cheeses and oysters. It's also home to Australia's southern-most vineyard.
