Yuulong was once a dairy and timber centre, and is now a peaceful little farm area. It is in the Otway Ranges between Johanna Beach, the Twelve Apostles and The Otway Fly in the centre of the Great Ocean Road.
It is where you will find Moonlight Head which offers a combination of privacy, tranquillity and luxury. It is set on 40 hectares of bush and farmland against an ocean backdrop.
The lodge accommodates up to eight and was designed by acclaimed Australian architect Glenn Murcutt with Wendy Lewin.
It is filled with modern pieces of furniture, antique Persian rugs on bluestone floors and the original art of Karl Maughan. He is recognised for his magnificent hyper-real paintings of lush flower and vegetable gardens, manicured bushes, native fauna and out-of-control wilderness.
European chic décor was aimed for and achieved. Italian furniture and lighting, set against white walls. Handcrafted Savoir beds measuring 2.1 metres by 2.1 metres and with tension adjustments are said to give the best night's sleep ever. They are made up with feather down duvets and pure cotton sheets.
Bluestone bathrooms have a 1.8 metre long bath and luxurious Descamps towels. There is a selection of beauty balms and lotions for pampering.
Breakfast and snacks are provided, and are usually enjoyed while taking in spectacular sunrises and sunsets and some local visitors — kangaroos, parakeets and kookaburras.
Chefs are on hand to prepare the perfect meal — steak, seafood, salads — accompanied by local and international wines.
If you choose, drinks of choice will be served in the formal living area after dinner.
Children are not forgotten … there are plenty of games, books, films and music to entertain them.
If you can bear to leave Moonlight Head Lodge the area offers so much. Fishing, golf, helicopter tours, hiking for all levels of fitness, cycling, whale watching, winery tours and sweet neighbouring towns. Visit nearby Wreck Beach at low tide and see the anchors of shipwrecked Fiji and Marie Gabrielle, just two of the more than 300 shipwrecks along the coast.
To help you with your exploring of the area, the big decision is whether to take the BMW, the classic Mercedes coupé or the Ducatti motorbike. Don't be concerned about losing your way — a GPS will be provided! See, they have thought of everything.
