Natalie tries her luck on the high seas at some secret mens business!
Jason Miley, owner of Reel Action Fishing Charters, has loved fishing since he landed his first crab at four years of age. He operates his business from Mariner's Cove Marina on the Gold Coast and was brave enough to take Natalie Gruslewski and some of her female friends on a day's fishing excursion.
The day began at 6am in Jason's 8.5-metre aluminium custom-built sports game-fishing vessel, Kingfisher. It is equipped with bunks and a toilet and takes seven passengers and the skipper. Bait and tackle is supplied and Jason will show those who don't know how to bait a hook and cast a line out.
Even though it's mostly men who go fishing, Jason believes women learn faster and are more patient.
The game-fishing season lasts from November to April, governed by the migration season of the fish. Teasers and lures are used to catch big game fish such as marlin, mahi mahi, yellow fin tuna, Spanish mackerel and wahoo.
Flathead, bream, whiting, mangrove Jack, trevally, taylor and sole are to be found in the calm waters of the estuary, while surf/beach fishers can land taylor, bream, dart, whiting, flathead, shark, trevally and jewfish.
As you would expect, when fishing is involved, there are many stories, true and tall, and Jason loves to relate some of his experiences.
