Aussie actress and singer Sophie Monk, now living in
Los Angeles, agreed to take
Getaway to a place where it's party party party day and night. That's the story of Cabo San Lucas on the tip of Mexico's Baja California Peninsula, and it's just a two-hour flight from LA.
Cabo is built around several bays and beaches. The warm waters of the Pacific Ocean and Sea of Cortez have lured Americans from freezing winters for a very long time. You will also see sea lions basking on coastal rock formations as you enjoy endless water sports.
To get the most out of her visit, Sophie enlisted Luis Oropeza, local celebrity minder. Luis is an actor, musician and local identity. He knows Cabo inside out and first up was a snorkelling trip which began as a party. Tequila is always on hand when you fancy indulging. The national drink is pretty strong, so drink it wisely!
The marine sanctuary is home to schools of triggerfish, angelfish, goatfish, parrotfish and loads of other colourful sealife. Fishing of any kind is not allowed, but exploring and taking pictures of teeming marine life and coral reefs is more than satisfying.
ME Cabo
This is definitely a party hotel. It has 155 rooms and suites, free-form pools and beautiful gardens flowing down to Nikki Beach. A two-level lagoon pool leads to the beach where drinks are served. It has three restaurants, bars and lounges, Passion Club and Lounge, Yhi spa ad Bali beds when you need a rest from partying. Don't expect to spend a lot of time in your room!
Shopping
There are three main shopping areas in Cabo. Puerto Paraiso Mall on the marina is air-conditioned, and that can be very welcome. You will find quality arts and crafts from various regions and beautiful jewellery made by local silversmiths. International exclusive fashion designers are there, along with Mexican creations. The Mall has 10 movie theatres and a bowling alley.
You will find more temptations along the streets west of El Squid Roe. Outdoor bazaar-style vendors sell traditional tourist items.
In the streets behind Cabo Wabo you will find silver, turquoise and opal jewellery. Don't forget to bargain and you can expect to leave with something beautiful to take home that won't break the bank.
Nightlife
It's endless. The Marina is jammed with bars, restaurants and nightclubs. Luis chose Nowhere Bar where Sophie was introduced to the very spicy Mexican version of sushi.
Cabo San Lucas is the place for you if you love sun, water, nightlife that doesn't quit and the odd Margarita.
